NFL Pro Bowl Leaving Hawaii

The NFL Pro Bowl has been played in Aloha Stadium now for over 30 years.

Not next year.

According to KHNL NBC the NFL is not only leaving Hawaii they are going to play the game the week before the Super Bowl.

This is sad for Hawaii, but it makes sense from a football standpoint. Many NFL players opt out of the game due to the long layoff many of them have between their last game of the season and the Pro Bowl which is played in Feb.

Is this a full time move?

Right now the 2010 game will be played at Miami’s Dolphin Stadium. After that the NFL will see how it went and decide the future. Maybe it will return to Hawaii.

It has been good for local businesses over the years. It brings in over $31 Million to the local economy and of course the exposure it brings to Hawaii is hard to calculate.

One idea is to have NFL pre-season games in here. Now that is an idea I like and wouldn’t mind mixing in a little vacation time and football in August! :-)

I think the NFL will see that this is not a good move for a few reasons:

    1. Players enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that the Pro Bowl offers
    2. With the game being played a week before the Superbowl the NFL will not have top players participating in the game
    3. On a personal note, I love Hawaii and hope that the games come back!
